Songwriters: Jamal Malik & Ollie de Savigny
Band Members: Jamal Malik, George Prosser, Albert Cobham & Ollie de Savigny.
Daisy Surf encapsulates the sound of a band trying to find their own place within the noises that they love, finding its initial inspiration in early ‘80s surf rock and expanding into 2010s indie.
The song came to be in early 2017 when Jamal sat down with a laptop microphone held up to a bass amp and thrashed together some jangly guitar riffs and a driving bassline. After a bit of editing, he showed it to Ollie to see if he wanted to collaborate on some vocals.
At this time, the band was merely conceptual, and simply consisted of four friends seeking an escape from an increasingly stiff-collared educational institution. Early Seabass was a cover band, playing bar & drama nights at their university.
Bars, drugs, looking pasty and being hasty are all aspects of a modern 20-year-old’s life in London. We are surrounded by a frantic atmosphere, where nobody stops to talk, and everybody has somewhere to be; it becomes increasingly difficult to just put your phone down and experience a moment fully, or to easily discern which connections are authentic against those which are fleeting, and whether or not they can be both at the same time.
Daisy Surf is Seabass’ expression of these anxieties, and calls for a re-do on our attitudes towards authenticity and empathy. After 5 months of a quarantined lockdown, many people will be sympathetic to the time we can lose to stress and worry.
The song was recorded in its entirety at home, bedroom produced by Jamal and then mastered by Ben Gibbon.
lyrics
Intro
North, West, East, South
North, West, East, South
I said North, West, East, South
North, West, East, South
Verse 1
Something doesn’t add up, are you looking for love
Or music or drink or drugs?
Didn’t reach for her hand because you don’t understand,
What exactly it is that makes you feel like a man
Leave your phone at the bar,
don’t take any pictures, don’t take any pictures
Yeah you’re not going far,
yeah I’m gonna miss ya,
yeah I’m gonna miss ya
Verse 2
Rarely these days, have you got time,
To slip off your watch and forget your mind (it’s alright)
Hmm, so stop giving in, and stop looking down
Pick yourself up, and spin her around
Catching a gaze, and you’re flashing a smile,
So don’t look away - don’t look away for a while
Don’t look away,
So don’t look away,
So don’t look away
NORTH / WEST / EAST / SOUTH
Bridge
Four-pointed useless little thing,
I’m falling deeper and deeper in…
You’re looking thin, you’re looking pasty,
They always say - so let’s not be hasty
I’m okay, I lost my mind, I lost my way, can we rewind?
Can we rewind?
I lost my way, I lost my mind
I lost my way, can we rewind?
North, West, East, South
North, West, East, South
I said a North, West, East, South
North, West, East, South
(I lost my way, I lost my mind
I lost my way, can we rewind?)
